Phoenix

Saturday May 14th
The big day of the rental car exchange!  Got up early and returned the car ahead of time to the airport.  We then had to get to the next rental car depot without transport but managed to use local shuttles, the metro, and only had to walk the last 3 blocks in the heat.  The depot was in a down-trodden area with lots of pawnshops and we encountered one or two homeless folk so we were quite glad when we saw the Hertz sign and didn’t have to trek any further.  We picked up a shiny white Toyota Yaris and were soon on our way.
Spent the afternoon looking around the excellent Art Gallery which houses a big contemporary art collection.  One of the most striking pieces was by a Japanese artist and consisted of coloured LEDs on long leads in a dark room with mirrored walls.  The lights were programmed to cycle in different patterns and the title was “Fireflies”.  I wandered in a bit too far and had difficulty finding my way out as it was so dark.  We returned to the hotel to plan our route onwards.  We debated at length about whether to go south or north from Phoenix to Houston (our next rental car swap) but in the end decided on the Southern route as it is around 300 miles shorter.  Tucson, here we come!
