Friday May 13th
Just realised we need to be in Phoenix for the Friday 13th not the 14th as it’s Saturday that we’re picking the next car up. Quickly booked a Hotel using Expedia Super deals which have proved to be very good so far. Booked into the Radisson which is very posh and is 1/3 normal price. Interesting bed with a controller for how hard you want it to be.
Long hot journey through the desert. Stopped to have a look at the Joshua Tree National Park but we were prevented from visiting the tourist office by a notice warning of a plague of bees. We decided not to take the risk and set off back down the road which was fairly desolate. We stopped to look at a placard with tourist information about the area and heard a faint but ominous buzzing when we got out of the car. The longer we stayed, the louder it got. We decided not to hang around as word was obviously getting around the flying creepy crawlies that two sources of liquid were available. Or it could have been the bees from up the road deciding to explore. Quickly got into the car, rolled up the windows and took off.
The other interesting part of the journey was the dust whorls that looked like plumes of smoke as they advanced across the desert. There were signs warning us about this but we didn’t encounter any crossing the road. There must be strange localised winds out there.
